Warrior Soul in one of the
best-keep hard rock secrets of this last decade.
A few people knew it, but the
record
"The Space Age Playboys" is one of the most energetic and
powerful albums that have been recorded in last years.
Unfortunately its popular repercussion was minimum, and that caused the bands dissolution. Warrior Soul undisputable leader, Kory Clarke, have formed a new band called Space Age Playboys. They debut album has appeared right now, and its gonna fill of pleasure to those who are looking for dirty lyrics and rockingī riffs. Waiting for a tour in our country, we have a telephonic conversation with the anphetaminic Kory, and if somebody dont know, he is one of the most charismatic front men of the actual rock scene.
Q: Can you explain us how did you form Space Age Playboys?
K: One day I was in the toilet. I was reading porno magazines while having a shit, and I thought: "how nice were to be in L.A. and form the most stupid band of this city, the most intelligent city of rockīnīroll".
Q: Why did you choose the same name of Warrior Soul last album?
K: Basically for commercial reasons. I were two years thinking about it, it seemed to me ingenious to use that name for the more stupid and sucking rockīnīroll band in the world.
Q: are you really?
K: I hope it. Were trying it.
Q: Why did you choose this musicians? Are they your friends?
K: In L.A. the meaning of word "friends" is relative. Here nobodys your friend.
Q: You really think that?
K: When you come here, you must understand that you dont gonna make friends. Everybody wants to be a star in L.A., and my boys and I wants it too.
Q: The bassist player, Riley, played in Killing Machine with Tracii Guns. Do you like L.A. Guns music?
K: I think they have a pair of very good songs.
Q: Do you know Tracii personally?
K: Yeah, Tracii and Phil Lewis. Were good friends.
Q: Can you tell me how the album production was?
K: With a lot of freedom. All very simple. Too much alcohol. It all were very funny (laughs). We had a good time.
Q: Who is the producer?
K: I am.
Q: Do you like be your music producer?
K: I like to produce all type of bands, not only mine.
Q: What kind of music would you like to produce?
K: I think that AC/DC must hired me as producer.
Q: Are you a fan of AC/DC?
K: No. I only would do it for the money.
Q: Whats the difference between the Warrior Soul "Space Age Playboys" album and your new band?
K: The new album is very direct. The band is totally shit, probably the shit more shitting that never had exist. Thats my will. I got the feeling the more shitting we are, the more records were gonna sale. (laughs).
Q: On your promotional flyers say that your ideology is based on "drink and fuck". Can you explain it better?
K: In every of our songs you can find a reason to hold your fist. The lyrics tell the story, much more than in Warrior Soul. If you listen the record you would understand it all.
Q: I was listening it just before the interview.
K: You have to realize that behind the texts a lot of things happens.
Q: How do you write the lyrics?
K: With the maximum emotional effort. When I work so hard in the lyrics, nobody understand them (laughs) .
Q: "Drink and Fuck" sounds very politically incorrect. What do you think about politically correct bands, like Nirvana or Pearl Jam?
K: I dont like them. Really I hate the more part of bands.
Q: Why?
K: Because nobody of them told nothing, they are completely boring. All the rockīnīroll industry is incredibly boring, you must fight against it. Thats were doing. I dont want to talk about Nirvana. I wanna smoke hash, take heroin, write songs I have about seventh songs recorded in albums; if you wanna know my opinion about every theme, listen my albums.
Q: "Playboys" is about the magazine?
K: No, this magazine is really boring. Its a shit. Its fucking horrible, but the pornography theme is excellent, were gonna do pornography better than anybody. Nobody can do it better than me.
Q: Whose are your favourite porno stars?
K: My favourite porno stars are the girls who fucks whit me (laughs). I record them in video. Are they your favourite too?
Q: Of course. What are the Space Age Playboys plans for the future?
K: A European tour. Thats all. I dont care a shit.
Q: Will you play in Spain?
K: I never have been in Spain. It would be nice. Im sure that Spain is a fucking incredible place.
Q: Here is nothing of rockīnīroll.
K: I suppose it, and Im sorry. Anyway, dont mind, in L.A. are nothing of rockīnīroll, same as New York, or fucking London. Theres no rock in no fucking place, but we are fucking rockīnīroll.
Q: Im barely sure of being the only person in Spain with a Warrior Soul t-shirt.
K: My friend, you have fucking guts (laughs).
Q: I suppose the Space Age Playboys influences are: "Ziggy Stardust" (David Bowie), "Sgt. Pepper" (Beatles), "Raw Power" (Stooges), "Nevermind the Bollocks" (Sex Pistols) and "Dressed to Kill" (Kiss). What can you tell me about this?
K: Can you imagine better influences?
Q: No.
K: (laughs). Are you a vinyl collector?
Q: I love them all.
K: I know, and me too.
Q: Do you know David Bowie personally?
K: No, but I fucked with his ex-wife.
Q: Really?
K: Oh, yeah.
Q: Your favourites Bowies albums?
K: Better than albums, I prefer some songs. Im more interested in all he recorded with Iggy. Songs like "Sister Midnight", and "China Girl", yeah, the old stuff with Iggy. When he left Iggy, he was completely lost.
Q: I love his Glam records.
K: Of course, guy. They are fucking good.
Q: Is possible to define your music as Glam?
K: I would like to. In fact is simply rockīnīroll, it can be considered as Glam. Were living in Glam Rock City, and we must be more Glam. I think that right now we are glamorous as it means in the 70īs.
Q: Are The Beatles another influence for you?
K: The Beatles problem is that they are an influence for everybody. I think they were too much good. Same problem as Beach Boys, Little Richard or Howlinī Wolf. You cant overcome this type of persons that live before you. Must respect them.
Q: Everybody loves The Beatles, but a very few people remember Beach Boys.
K: Nobody remembers nothing. Only you and me remember.
Q: I think that somebody else too.
K: I hope it.
Q: What do you think about The Stooges?
K: A fucking brilliant blues-rock band. Theyre from Detroit, what else can I say? Im from Detroit. From here came good soul too.
Q: I thought you were from New York.
K: No, no, Im from Detroit.
Q: Detroit Rock City.
K: Great song (they start to sing "Detroit Rock City" from Kiss). Y grew up in Detroit when Kiss started to play, I remember "Rockīnīroll all nite, party everyday".
Q: Thats my favourite Kiss song.
K: Its the best! Gene is a cocksucker, I hope youll put that in the fucking interview (laughs). Kory Clarke says that Gene Simmons is a cocksucker. Im not scared of his reaction.
Q: Have you seen they on tour?
K: No fucking way!. Fuck them, theyre fucking assholes. I hate them.
Q: But you like their music.
K: No, but my life is "rockīnīroll all nite and party everyday". I listen their records since a lot of years ago. They came with "Calling Dr.Love" and "Rock and roll over"(?), o some kind of fucking shit album, the Kiss Army .fuck them! They are queers. The best they recorded was a live album in Detroit. In that moment I left the town. They imitated Iggy and Alice Cooper. Fuck them and fuck Marilyn Manson, who is another fucking homosexual and dont know a shit about nothing. He is unable to rock ten seconds running.
Q: You hate Marilyn Manson.
K: You cant blame me for that. Hes a fucking copy, a fucking artist of shit, hes like a fucking top model. He dont care about nothing, only wants money. But you are talking with a man who is twelve years rocking. That guy (Manson) doesnt matter a shit to me.
Q: I dont think that Kiss imitates Iggy Pop.
K: Dont you think Alice Cooper imitates Iggy?
Q: No, you said that Kiss imitates Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop. I think that Alice is an influence to Kiss.
K: No, Alice Cooper imitates Iggy, and I dont remember admit that.
Q: I love Alice Cooper.
K: Me too. And did know you a thing? He imitates Iggy Pop.
Q: I dont think that, his music was very personal.
K: Yeah, no doubt, but I think that he imitates Iggy on stage. You cant mess with Iggy.
Q: Iggy is basic in my life too.
K: You cant mess with Iggy because he was the first. You cant say Alice Cooper is better than Iggy, because Alice imitate Iggy. In his book wrote: "Oh my god, I saw Alice Cooper and hes better than me, but imitates me." Look at "Raw Power", you cant overcome this.
Q: I think "1970/I feel alright" is the best rock song in history. Are you right with me?
K: Yeah. I love the fucking Cooper. Ą"Billion Dollar Babies"! you can't overcome this too.
Q: I love that album.
K: It's fucking cool. But he learn all from Iggy, he learn how to play from Iggy. And did you know where Iggy learn? From MC5, they were from Detroit too. I'm sorry guys, but everything came from Detroit.
Q: What you think about Sex Pistols?
K: They came from all this, and went a bit more far. At their side the rest seems like monkeys (laughs). They were incredible. The best rock and roll band from all times.
Q: Better than Stooges?
K: Yeah. They were better than Dolls, better than everybody. They were Steve Jones, the fucking Johnny Rotten, Paul Cook and Sid Vicious. The best rock group. But the best rockīnīroll star was Jimi Hendrix, he mixed everything, for example blues with effects. Sex Pistols are the best band, theres nothing better, but can't be the Sex Pistols without Ramones and I say it seriously.
Q: Dou you think the present rock is lack of glamour?
K: No way. Los Angeles is full of elegant people. Some rock shows are fucking cool, you wouldnt believe it.
Q: Another bands from L.A. you like right now?
K: I like Taime Downeīs new band, the Newlydeads. Their present stuff is great. The base is technology, but is totally rockīnīroll. Theyre really good. I like Backyard Babies too. They gave three shows here in L.A.. They rocks, must live here.
Q: They played in my city recently and was incredible.
K: Because they rocks. Rocks! Is exactly what we are trying.
Q: Warrior Soul in one of their influences.
K: Is one of them. Another is the Stones, and definitely Social Distortion are too. Unfortunately they arent from L.A.. Orange Country sucks!
Q: What do you think about the Orange Country musical scene (Pop-punk, ska )
K: It sucks! The only good are Social Distortion. And of course I like Offspring too
.Q: Why you like Offspring?
K: They rocks! They tell you whats happening. Thats what I feel.
Q: Well. Your song "Tokyo Girls" is about Japan. Have you been there?
K: The truth is that I am a little tired of the fucking japanese.
Q: What is the reason?
K: They promised me a discography management since three years ago, and I'm still waiting it. They are nothing but a group of fucking losers.
Q: But there's a lot of hard rock.
K: So what! They sucks.
Q: What about Tokyo?
K: Fuck Tokyo!
Q: What do you think about Japaneses movies, like Godzilla?
K: They are a fucking shit. The only good director was Kurosawa. What do you want? That I love Japan? But I dont. (sings "Tokyo Girls"). It's about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Q: I didnt know that.
K: But know it. Listen my fucking record.
Q: What's your relationship with the rest of Warrior Soul members?
K: I dont talk with them, and that doesnt matter a shit to me. I am Warrior Soul. Fuck them, they were assholes. They only did what I said.
Q: How was the split up?
K: They went away. We had a contract still. Forget about them, they are fucking cowards.
Q: In 1995 you played in Donnington. What you remember about that?
K. We play too much early in the morning. It was the best moment in my life.
Q: Really? Why?
K: We played in front of 50.000 persons!!! It was wonderful, funny, drinking champagne on backstage. Rob Zombie was jealousy about us, because we were all the time with a lot of people.
Q: Do you like his music?
K: No, hes a fucking loser.
Q: But his music is pure entertainment.
K: Yeah, when you are in a discotheque. Do you really think his show is entertainment? He's a fucking boring son of a bitch.
Q: The same year you played in Dynamos Festival.
K: I remember Rob Zombie looking at me like I was a freak or something else, because I was with a group of people. I went to salutate him, and he said me: (imitating Rob Zombie, with a doom-voice) "you play really well, I dont know why you are so good". I said: "I dont know what are you fucking talking about, you are a millionaire" . He's a fucking asshole. He must go to talk with his buddies Beavis and Butt-Head.
Q: Do you like them? I think they are funny.
K: Of course, I havent got a problem with them.
Q: Dou you think they like your music?
K: I dont know, maybe. The last thing I want is that the assholes of Hollywood know me. Hollywood is full of idiots that think they are very important. Nobody is important.
Q: Iggy is important for me.
K: The president of the United States isnt important, shame as no fucking senator and sudamericans dictators. They are fucking idiots that dont realize a shit. If you listen my records for three or four hours, you will know what's happening. I dont care about nobody and nothing, in no fucking place and no fucking moment. Fuck all the world! I would beat everybody if they come to my street.
Q: Your lyrics are too much politized. What do you think about Rage Against The Machine?
K: oh, they are a good band, a part of what they say is interesant. Their political ideas are correct.
Q: They boring me.
K: Yeah, thats true, I think they are incredibly boring too, but I believe they are a good band. They are boring and good.
Q: Can you explain me the musical evolution of Warrior Soul? The first album was so different from the last.
K: That's because I rise up. I always do what I want to do, and nobody is gonna tell me what to do.
Q: Why the title "Last Decade, Dead Century" for the first album?
K: I think its evident. In this century have died in wars 60 millions of people. That's is, 60 millions. "Last Decade, Dead Century". Much more deaths in this century than in the others centuries united.
Q: And "Drugs, God and The New Republic"?
K: Thats was a trying to explain that we want to build a new place to live. A place for people who think that everything else doesnt matter a shit. Thats the New Republic.
Q: In "Salutations from the Ghetto Nation" are you talking about U.S.A.?
K: It's a hello from the ghetto. I am the only white person in twenty years who has told that the white people live in a ghetto.
Q: What do you think about New York bands like D-Generation or Psychotica?
K: They are really good. What else can I say about Jesse of D-Generation?. I am gonna tell you. They went wrong when take Ric Ocasek as producer. It sounds good, but have be better if I was the producer. I have nothing bad to say about Jesse. He's a punk. He loves New York. I am in L.A.
Q: I really like his music.
K: Really? Which songs?
Q: "She stands there", "No way out" .
K: I am disagree with you in this. Ric Ocasekīs production is not strong enough. D-Generation would have be the Guns and Roses of punk-rock. Anybody of my albums sounds more strong than D-Generation albums.
Q: Why dont you have produced their third album?
K: I would like to, but they have split out.
Q: I have no idea. It's a pity..
K: I like they were together. But Jesse isnt gonna stop, dont care. They are gonna make new bands.
Q: NY Loose have split up too.
K: Yeah, yeah. I would like them until dead, and I like the girl who sings too. They were fucking great, they really rocks. Now Danny (the bassist) is here, in L.A:
Q: What he is doing?
K: He had a new band called Motorchrist.
Q: How it sounds?
K: Is fucking rocker! Huge. I had just seem them in a show, just a hour ago.
Q: Whats your opinion about Guns and Roses?
K: I have no opinion.
Q: And their first album?
K: Really do you want a new album? "Appetite for Destruction" is same good as "Nevermind the Bollocks". I compare that without problems.
Q: Do you know Axl personally?
K: Of course.
Q: What he is doing actually?
K: Nothing. For three years he is recording the new album. He have fired everybody. I dont know how it's gonna sound. He can't stop drinking and smoking.
Q: They were very great.
K: Yeah, but I too. The old times doesnt matters, only matters right now. And now, who is rocking?
Q: The Space Age Playboys.
K: Yes. But a lot of people too. Backyard Babies are my favourite.
Q: And The Hellacopters?
K: Oh, they are great too. All the Scandinavian scene is fucking cool.
Q: Ok. To end the interview, have you got any message for your Spanish fans?
K: I wanna go to play there. I hope that some promoter take us.
Q: I hope it too.
K: You are the best, I would like to drink a beer with you. You can be sure it's gonna happen.
